Ralph Ellison's Second Novel

ellison.jpg

Ralph Ellison published Invisible Man in 1952 and achieved instant and long-lasting success. The book won the National Book Award and became part of our literary canon. Ellison set to work on a second novel but it failed to appear in his lifetime. Critics have been puzzled by the lack of another novel. Now his literary executor & an assistant have supplied an answer to this vexing question. It was not writer's block which was the problem. Rather it was an accumulation of thousands of pages of manuscript which they are sorting through and plan to publish next spring (Juneteenth which was published in 1999 from a small section of the enormous second novel). The main problem that Ellison had was that he became enamored of using a computer to write the second novel and fell in love with the technology so much that the new work grew explosively.

Scenes from Two Marriages

Two Booker Prize winners have authored current bestselling novels wth most of the action taking place in one day in the life of a married couple. In Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach the events of a wedding night in 1963--inexperience, miscommunication and impatience change forever the lives of that newly married couple.

Tomorrow by Graham Swift offers a much different view--the ruminations of a long -married woman on the eve of the day a family secret will be revealed--a revelation that will change everything.

These beautifully-written classics from two award-winning authors deserve your attention,

Charles Ives & Jazz?

One of my favorite artists has just brought out a new CD. Bruce Hornsby (he had great success in the late 80s playing with the Range) has put together a jazz trio with him on piano. One of the inluences on Hornsby is our own Danbury native Charles Ives. The title of the Hornsby CD, Camp Meeting is an allusion to Ives' Symphony Number 3. Ives is a master of classical music but Hornsby has a composition called Charlie, Woody and You/Study # 22 which is based on an Ives etude. You can hear selections from Camp Meeting on Amazon. If you want more information on Charles Ives just come to the Ask Me Desk at the Danbury Library
