Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria McKernan will be the book discussion topic next Tuesday, February 12th. This is a fictionalized account of the adventures of eighteen-year-old Perce Blackborow, who stowed away for the 1914 Shackleton Antarctic expedition and, after their ship Endurance was crushed by ice, endured many hardships. If you are familiar with the history or have seen the movie, you will enjoy discussing the book with other teens. For a list of all the Nutmeg Nominees for 2008, go to the Nutmeg Award site for a complete list and description of the nominated titles. The program is free, but you do need to register. |

I've heard about this book and never got a chance to read it. I might drop by the meeting and see the ideas about the book. It definately sounds like a good read!

This book discussion should be ineresting. The true story of Shackleton is pretty amazing, considering how far the expeditionary force went with ill-equipped men on an overly-optimistic trek across the Antarctic. Hopefully someone who knows the history can still discuss the book without having necessarily read it. :)

This is funny, considering that I literally finished this book 2 days ago! Sadly, I can't come to the book discussion, but for all of you Shackleton Stowaway- wannabees, this is definitely a great book to read (although near the end, it gets a little bit graphic in regards of amputations). The best part is, it's a true story!
P.S. For Mrs. Harrigan, this is Evan Lunt.
