How will you ring in the New Year?

group3_200pix.jpg

When I was young, younger than most of you are now, I loved "New Years Eve." Right, because I was able to stay up until midnight at which time everyone in the neighborhood went outside and made noise with pots and pans and noise makers. Last evening, however, I started thinking about the poetry of John Donne.

Today I decided to write my last entry for this year by asking you what you are reading or thinking this last week of 2009? I am looking forward to a great year with the Teen Council and the other programs I have at the library. I hope to see lots of you at the Teen Council meeting next Monday.

Books to read over vacation!

New books arrive in the young adult section every week. Check out what arrived in October, November and December.

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld is set at the beginning of World War I on June 28, 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated, triggering a sequence of alliances that plunges the world into war. But that is where the similarity ends. This global conflict is between the Clankers, who put their faith in machines, and the Darwinists, whose technology is based on the development of new species. This is fast moving action that you might really enjoy.

Those of you who are Westerfeld fans might want to put a hold on this book. Westerfeld is the author of the Uglies, Peeps, So Yesterday and the Midnighters series.

Fire a novel by Kristin Cashore is a prequel to Graceling. Set in a kingdom called the Dells, Fire is the last human-shaped monster, with unimaginable beauty and the ability to control the minds of those around her, but even with these gifts she cannot escape the strife that overcomes her world.

Do you ever check out new book trailers?

Did you read Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli? Do you ever check out book trailers? I thought this one for Graceling by Kristin Cashore was fairly good also.

I am hoping to make a few book trailers with the Teen Council. Unfortunately, it seems that most of you don't know what they are. Certainly, we could have you talk about the book, but there is no reason that we could not add background music and a few images.

I hope someone out there will have some time and motivation. Email me dharrigan@danburylibrary.org or comment below.
