When I was young, younger than most of you are now, I loved "New Years Eve." Right, because I was able to stay up until midnight at which time everyone in the neighborhood went outside and made noise with pots and pans and noise makers. Last evening, however, I started thinking about the poetry of John Donne.

Today I decided to write my last entry for this year by asking you what you are reading or thinking this last week of 2009? I am looking forward to a great year with the Teen Council and the other programs I have at the library. I hope to see lots of you at the Teen Council meeting next Monday.

But that is where the similarity ends. This global conflict is between the Clankers, who put their faith in machines, and the Darwinists, whose technology is based on the development of new species. This is fast moving action that you might really enjoy.

Set in a kingdom called the Dells, Fire is the last human-shaped monster, with unimaginable beauty and the ability to control the minds of those around her, but even with these gifts she cannot escape the strife that overcomes her world.
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, is the first book in "The Mortal Instruments" trilogy.

Clary Fray is a normal high school student growing up in New York City until she discovers that there are demons, her mother is kidnapped, and she meets the very alluring and two year older Jace.

I enjoyed this book for its fast pace and action, as well as the romance. Fantasy doesn't always do well on the mystery part of a story. Although I figured a lot of things out and suspected other things, I thought this was well organized and well thought out. Is there such a thing as a pure genre? It seems that mystery, fantasy, even science fiction use different aspects of each other. As for this book, it is a good story whatever the literary category.

Fight scenes must be hard to write because I often get lost. Sometimes I get confused on a second reading. It is hard to have words become visuals for fast action. But Clare did well, and maybe even better than most.

If you have read City of Bones, please make some comments here. If you haven't, you might want to give it a try. If you enjoyed Twilight, you might like this also.

So please comment. You might even find that you would get volunteer time. Besides, Kenny can't be the only member of Teen Council who is out there.

I don't know if any of you have seen the Cirque du Freak: Vampire's Assistant movie yet. It was based on Darren Shan's book, Cirque du Freak.

I thought the book was okay. The movie trailers look pretty good. There is another series by Darren Shan, Demonata, book 1 is Lord Loss. This year Teen Read Week is October 18-24. This week is also when the winning "Teens Top Ten" books for 2009 are announced. Have you read many of them? Since we are no longer an official Galley Book Group, I don't seem to read as many of the nominated titles, but I did read 5 of the winning 10. Hey, did any of you read "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman? I would love to know what you think.

Also, there is this great site from the Eastern Connecticut Young Adult Roundtable. Not only is there a great list broken into genre, but there are lists of book trailers, books to movies listed by Author, and new YA books.

And don't forget the TeenZone site. Click on Read It and there are lots of links including the list of new YA books at the Danbury Library.

REMINDER, Thursday is a Galley Book Discussion in the LTC Conference Room from 5:30 to 7:00. See you then. Email (dharrigan@danburylibrary.org) or call (797-4528) if you have any questions.
