When John Ford's classic was released, the Western had fallen to the level of low-budget"oaters'" to use Variety's demeaning term. Stagecoach resuscitated the genre, increased Ford's reputation, and made John Wayne a star, as it follow a varied group of people on a trip through Apache territory in 1880's New Mexico.
